Kayuni: Govt lacks conflict resolution skills

A political analyst has said President Peter Mutharika has consistently demonstrated that he lacks critical analysis of social-political developments in the country.

Associate professor and head of political and administrative studies at Chancellor College , Happy Kayuni, said as a result, Mutharika is not providing the leadership required to effectively manage crises.

In a response to a questionnaire when asked to analyse the President’s leadership at the beginning of the New Year, Kayuni said he did not mean that Mutharika should always be the first to respond to any situation.

“But there are some situations which by their perceived significance call upon the immediate response from the higher office.

“The Judiciary strike should have been given priority due to the role of this institution in consolidation of democratic governance in the country. Inability to respond immediately demonstrates lack of commitment to democratic governance,” he said.

He further said the sealing of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officers, clearly demonstrated that government lacks conflict resolution skills and also puts into question the President’s commitment to entrenchment of democratic ethos in this country.

“Any leader who has a keen eye to the wider political environment should take a more reconciliatory approach rather than what is happening.

“Even if ACB officers claim to have resumed their work, what would guarantee their effectiveness after such a hard-line approach against them?” said Kayuni.

  1. Mr Kayuni why should the President waist his time to tell you what he is doing to sort out the problems. Who are you? If you want join politics. Sum of you would like the President to spend his variable time to respond to useless so called political analysis so that you can distract his attention in dealing with real issues. Why should it be only the Northerners find faults? are you the most intelligent people? God forbid. Check the speck in your own eyes before you check on your neighbour. Different people have got different leadership styles. You can not impose what you want.
